A Very H Christmas...

* A Very H Christmas was this past weekend. The teachers and the RD's got together and swapped stories about working with the young'uns. It's amazing how similar college students and kindergarteners can be!

* On the way to Buford, Bird and I stopped in at the Bible Factory Outlet in Commerce to pick up some Christmas cards. At the register, we saw the newest addition to the Christian tchotchke department. You've probably seen the "Testamints" and the "CIA: Christian In Action" cards, but you may not have seen the Faith Chips. These are poker chips reminding you that Jesus went *ALL IN* for you, so *ANTE UP* your heart to Him.

Bird and I were at first just thinking these were funny and interesting and kind of laughing and pointing. But when the guys behind the counter (about our same age, lots of hair gel, a few hemp bracelets with crosses woven in) just stared at us and deadpanned, "It's supposed to be a witnessing tool," I just lost it. The whole situation was hilarious!

I am already a little uncomfortable at times in Christian bookstores because things like this seem to belittle what "witnessing" really means. I would love to hear the story of someone who was truly ministered to through a poker chip. I'm not saying God can't use whatever He wants to speak to a person, but this seems to me a stretch.

* Saturday night, the H Girls went out on the town to see the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. It was a little corny at times, but the Rockettes were truly amazing!! At the end of the show, there is an elaborate nativity scene (with real camels!!) and a reading from Luke 2. It was really awesome to see a non-religious show incorporating the real "reason for the Season" at the end. It was really beautiful, tasteful, and touching. Why can't all things "Christian" be the same?

Catching up on celebrity news....

I'm so sorry I've let you down, my faithful readers. I've been so busy with finishing out the semester, I haven't had time to keep you abreast of all the celebrity news of late. Here's a brief overview of what's been going on...

* Apparently those boots really were made for walkin'! Jessica Simpson announced that she was "parting ways" with her husband, Nick Lachey, over the Thanksgiving holiday. Rumor is he was on his way to Texas to celebrate with her family and continue working on their relationship, and she Blackberry'd him and told him not to bother coming down...they were finished and she was announcing their break-up. Friends of Nick say he still loves Jessica and really wants to work things out. I'm sure we'll hear much more in the coming weeks.

* Violet Ann Affleck was born Thursday, December 1 (also Bird's bday!), to parents Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck. I was expecting something old fashioned and classy. I actually kind of like Violet, but the Ann in the middle worries me. I'm really concerned they're going to call her "Violet Ann." IMHO, that'd be a little too much of Mom's West Virginia roots showing!

* Brad the Dad. Brad Pitt has filed the paperwork in LA to begin the process of adopting Angelina Jolie's kids. When the process is complete, the kids names will be changed to Maddox and Zahara Jolie-Pitt. The couple has never officially announced that they are romantically involved and seem to be making no plans to marry. I like them as a couple, though, and think they'll make great parents to the little ones.

* The Big (Sister) Apple. Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin announced they are, indeed, going to have a second child, due sometime in the Spring. I could never have predicted "Apple," so I'm not even going to try and guess this one's name!

Peace. Out.

SIRIUS Revolution...

One of the benefits of having a satellite (or digital cable) is having all kinds of music at your disposal. Not just with music networks like MTV, MTV2, VH1, CMT, etc. I mean the all-music, no-video channels. We have a ton of these channels, about half of them affiliated with SIRIUS. Today, I discovered the SIRIUS Revolution channel - it's all Christian rock and actually plays really good music...Project 86, Switchfoot, Kutless, the OC Supertones. I was really enjoying it until one of the little taglines broke in:

"SIRIUS Revolution...We'll rock the Hell out of you!"

I'm still listening, but inwardly (and outwardly, actually) cringing.
