The One Campaign...

Some of you probably saw the interview with Brad Pitt on Primetime Live last night. Although Pitt talked briefly about Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie, the focus of the piece was on Brad's work with the ONE Campaign. This is the campaign to end AIDS, starvation, and extreme poverty in Africa and other parts of the world. The G8 Summit is next month where the most powerful countries in the world (including America) will be represented to discuss what can be done about these issues. Please take the time to look at the site and consider signing the declaration. Also, take a look at who else has signed. It's so cool to finally see a cause that is uniting Christians with humanitarians and celebrities.

It reminded me of my time in Kenya (Ethiopia's neighbor) and how desperate things are there.

i doubt a bunch of celebrities are going to end poverty, when the 100 or so billion that we are pumping into africa isnt working. just a thought

it isn't just celebrities that are trying to do this. that is why the ONE campaign wants people to sign the petition.
The use of celebrities is partly just an advertising thing so that people will pay attention to the cause. what is so interesting about the ONE campaign is exactly what Michelle said, it is bringing together Christians, liberals, humanitarians, celebrities and normal people like you and me.

Look what Bono has done for Africa through DATA (www.data.org) and then we'll talk about the effectiveness of 'celebrities' and what they can and can't do in humanitarian aid work.

I have strong opinions about the level of life in Africa, as anyone would, if given the opportunity to travel there.
The only difference between us is that God chose to let us be born in a country that had opportunity.

Sorry about the link...it's working now.

I don't really have a problem with celebrities bringing attention to certain causes. I mean, why not use their powers for good instead of evil, right? As Brad Pitt said on that interview, he can't get out of the press, and these people can't get into it, so why not do so redirection and bring some attention to them? Our society (myself included) is pretty much obsessed with celebrities and what they wear, who they date, where they live, what restaurants they choose, and every other mundane detail about their lives. If they can bring awareness to things that are wrong with the world just by lending their name to a cause, I'm all for that.

Also, one percent of the US budget (which is what ONE is campaigning for) is $25 billion. We currently give a lot less than that. Money doesn't solve everything, but if it was used in the right way, it could solve a LOT in Africa and other poverty-stricken countries.
